These vessels are wine spitoons or Le Crachoir. I was in the Loire Valley with a wine importer visiting Mark Olivier at his 185 hector vineyard. When Mark heard that I was a potter he told me that his Great Grandfather was also a potter and proceeded to bring me an old woodfired Crachoir. Mark said ” it is a shame to have a plastic Crachoir in this stone and walnut cellar. He asked if I could make one. I said “sure”, but in fact I made nearly a hundred. These are some of the ones I make. I gifted some to wine making friends in France but have sold many to wine shops and enofiles in the US. The last photo is of one of my crachoirs in use at the Gascony wine expo. A friend was there tasting and sent me the photo.
